We've Got Answers
to all your questions.

(Well, not all of them. We can’t figure out #4 on that ECON final either.)

What is Alight?

It’s an apartment community designed especially with University of South Carolina students in mind, offering spacious 2 and 4 bedroom apartments, a full set of amenities and a dedication to quality — all in a great location and at competitive rates.

Is Alight part of the University of South Carolina?

Alight is a privately owned and professionally managed community. Click here for more information about the management and ownership.

Can I live with friends, or can you match me with roommates?

You can select your roommate(s), or you can apply on your own and we can match you with other students. Applicants answer a short list of lifestyle questions to help in the matching process.

What are per-person contracts?

Instead of requiring all roommates to sign a joint lease, each person at Alight has their own individual contract, with one person per bedroom. This means you are only responsible for paying for yourself — not your roommates. Even if a roommate moves out or other bedrooms in your apartment are empty, you only pay the rate for your bedroom. Click here to see a sample Housing Agreement.

What is included in the rate?

Each resident at Alight pays a flat installment rate that includes:

  • Furniture
  • Flat-panel HDTV mounted in each living room
  • Wireless Internet throughout the community
  • Washer and dryer in each apartment
  • Water/sewer, trash removal
  • Community features — pool, fitness center, etc.
  • Private shuttle bus to the University of South Carolina campus
Are private bathrooms available?

Yes. All two-bedroom apartments at Alight have two bathrooms, each accessed privately from inside the resident’s bedroom. In four-bedroom apartments, two bedrooms share an adjoining, compartmentalized bathroom.

Are the apartments furnished?

Yes. Each apartment includes a complete set of furniture, including full-size beds, desks and chairs, dressers, fabric couch and side chairs, coffee table and dining set — plus a wall-mounted HDTV comes in every apartment. Please visit our model apartments to see furniture samples.

When do the contracts start and end?

The standard term is August 15, 2024 to July 23, 2025, with payments made in 12 equal installments. Limited alternate dates may be available; please inquire with our staff. Click here to see a sample Housing Agreement.

Is a co-signer or financial guaranty required?

Each resident must pay an administrative fee within 7 days after signing the Housing Agreement. This fee is reduced significantly if the resident provides a qualifying guarantor (often a parent) for their financial obligations under Housing Agreement.

Can I pay by credit card?

Yes. Residents can pay online 24 hours per day, by credit card or ACH electronic checking. Alight also offers automatic payment by either credit card or checking account — just fill out one page, one time and payments will be made automatically. Convenience fees apply for credit card and debit card payments.

Will my financial aid cover charges at Alight?

Your living costs at Alight can be covered by financial aid, just like on-campus housing. Any available financial aid funds, after university charges are satisfied, are released to the student for non-institutional expenses, such as off-campus housing. These funds can be used to pay charges at Alight. Normal payment deadlines will continue to apply.

Is Alight open to non-students?

Nearly all the residents at Alight Columbia are students at USC, with others from Benedict College, Allen University, Columbia College and Midlands Tech and the per-person contracts are also designed with students in mind. Residents/families with children are welcome. There is no extra cost for minor children in the care of adult residents, other than regular charges for each bedroom space selected by the resident. A minor occupying a bedroom space rented by a parent, guardian or person with legal custody is not considered a breach of the Housing Agreement or a violation of the rules. Alight Columbia is an Equal Opportunity housing provider and welcomes applications from non-students. In order to match student roommates in shared apartments, we will request roommate consent for any non-student occupants.

What kind of safety and security are provided?

Management staff are on-site and can be reached by a 24-hour phone number.

What are the policies on pets, smoking and guests?

Alight is pet-friendly in select apartments, subject to limits on animals and breeds. Alight is a smoke-free community in all indoor and adjacent areas, as well as the clubhouse and pool area. Guests are welcome at all times, subject to the consent of roommates and security considerations. Overnight guests are welcome, with limits on the number of days and guests.

Can I park my vehicle at Alight?

Alight offers free surface parking for all residents. Limited guest parking is also available at no charge.

What other transportation options will I have?

Alight provides a free private shuttle bus to the University of South Carolina campus, picking up at the Horseshoe. The trip from Alight to campus is just 7 minutes. Residents can also bike the 1¼ mile — just cross the Congaree on Knox Abbott and continue straight up Blossom Street into campus. Driving to Benedict College, Allen University or Columbia College is easy too.

Can I see a model apartment?

Yes. Please request an appointment for a personal tour, or just stop by to see us and we’ll be happy to show you the community.
